Do Reservists Get the Same Training as Active Duty

Spiritual Minded Military Delaware Army National Guard: Do Reservists Get the Same Training as Active Duty — The Training Protocol

Yes. Reservists are as well-trained as active duty soldiers.

Not similar training. Not watered-down training. The same training, same experience.

The U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy at Fort Jackson does not award a distinction between two certificates. There is no 13 week recruit training for reservists in the Marine Corps. The qualifications, standards, and schools are the same.

The only distinction is the schedule. Full-time training while on active duty. Reservists train part-time. The standards are the same.

WHAT THE TRAINING STANDARD ACTUALLY SAYS

The Delaware Code is clear. The Adjutant General's rules and regulations for the Delaware National Guard must "conform to the rules, regulations, and statutes of the Department of Defense, the Army, the Air Force, and the National Guard Bureau of the United States."

This is non-adjustable. This is the law.

The Marine Corps Reserve website makes it clear that “Reserve Marines undergo the same rigorous training program as active duty Marines—13 weeks of Marine Corps Recruit Training, the same Military Occupational Specialties as active duty Marines, and nearly identical eligibility requirements."

The same Airman training. The same type of schools as MOS. The same standards.

Drill sergeants are active duty and Reserve working together at Fort Jackson. You could stand all of the drill sergeants in a line, and you still wouldn't be able to tell who has been in reserve and who has been active," said Sgt. 1st Class Steven Wood, who has flown on a number of Echo missions.

There is no difference, so there's no way for the trainees to tell it apart.

THE DELAWARE MISSION

The Delaware National Guard has two missions: state and federal.

  • State Mission: The National Guard is mandated by state law to protect life and property and preserve peace, order, and public safety. Outside of a mobilization or when under federal control, Guardsmen report to the governor of Delaware.
  • Federal Mission: To ensure that units are well-trained and equipped for immediate call-up for war, national emergency, or as required. DE National Guard units work with the Army, Air Force, and the National Guard of the United States (Army and Air Force Reserves).

The training requirement for both missions is the same. The enemy is not interested in whether you are on active duty or in the Guard. If the enemy is not ready, then he does not care.

THE TRAINING PROTOCOL

This is a question that has deeper meaning: "Do reservists get the same training as active duty?" But, honestly, "Am I really ready?

The real question is answered in the training protocol.

First Rule: Standards never get lower

There is no "reserve standard" for the Army. There is no “reserve standard” for the Marine Corps. The standards are joined in unity, since the battle site is joined in unity.

What this means to you: When you wear the uniform, you are in the same standard of service as all other soldiers who wear it. You've been ready for the same battle.

Second Rule: You're on a different schedule. Your Readiness: Not.

Active duty training daily. Training takes place every weekend and for two weeks a year. The enemy does not come when you can work as a civilian.

For you this means that your training has to be purposeful. Time is shortened. The standard is not a thing.

Third rule: "Your civilian skills are not a distraction.

Reservists have civilian skills not found in active duty service. "We deal with civilians every day back home. We have military policemen. We have our infantrymen. We have every MOS you can think of. Not only are you bringing in different MOSs, you are bringing in different skill sets. As far as management and as far as technical skills from a civilian aspect, we have a lot that your active component doesn't have."

What it means to you: You are NOT a second-class soldier. You are a force multiplier.

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize." — 1 Corinthians 9:24-25

THE WILMINGTON ARMORY ASSIGNMENT

The Delaware Army National Guard's main armory is located in Wilmington. You have taken part in training there. You have been in formation there. You have noticed the soldiers around you and thought, "Was my training sufficient?

Your training is sufficient. The question remains—will you stay prepared after drills?

The enemy strikes during the week between drill weekends. When you are at your civilian job. While traveling home. In the stillness in which you are alone.

The training protocol continues outside the armory. It's not all about weapon qualification. It is a matter of spiritual qualification.

THE THREE TRAINING TRUTHS

Your Training Is Credible

Every school you attended is the same school active duty attended. Every qualification you earned is the same qualification active duty earned. The certificate does not say "Reserve." It says "United States Army."

Your Experience Is Unique

Active duty soldiers do not manage civilian employees. Active duty soldiers do not balance military obligations with mortgage payments. Active duty soldiers do not explain their service to civilian bosses who do not understand.

Your experience is not a weakness. Your experience is a different kind of strength.

Your Readiness Is Your Responsibility

The Guard provides the training. The Guard provides the equipment. The Guard does not live in your house between drills.

Your readiness between drills is your responsibility. Your physical readiness. Your mental readiness. Your spiritual readiness.

"Plans are established by seeking advice, so if you wage war, obtain guidance." — Proverbs 20:18
