Spiritual Minded Military Ohio Army Reserve: How to Stay Warm on Duty Without Freezing—The Winter Combat Protocol
THE COLD IS NOT THE ENEMY. YOUR PREPARATION IS.
In February you have been on guard duty at Camp James A. Garfield. You were at the Defense Supply Center Columbus when the wind chill was minus fifteen. You've been at Defense Supply Center Columbus when it was a minus fifteen wind chill. When the snow began to fall and the heater in the Humvee wasn't working, you did night watch at the Youngstown Reserve Center.
You were wearing all of your clothes. Thermal underwear. Wool socks. Fleece jacket. Gore-Tex shell. Cold weather boots. Gloves. Hat. Scarf. You were still cold. Your feet feel numb. Your hands are no longer functional. You have a slowdown of your mind.
It's not cold weather; it's the heat. The cold will be the enemy's friend. The problem is, you haven't prepared.
The standard-issue cold weather gear is made for one purpose. Keeping you alive. Inability to retain heat. Not maintaining your functionality. Failure to keep you on guard.
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you." — Isaiah 43:2
WHY YOU ARE COLD WHEN YOU SHOULD NOT BE
Cold weather equipment is supplied by the military. There's no manual for the military for cold weather training for people. What the Military Doesn't Tell You About Keeping Warm.
There are 5 ways your body cools:
- Radiation: Heat is dispersed into the air by your body. The top three radiators are your head, neck, and wrists. Cover them. The majority of your body heat is lost through uncovered skin.
- Conduction: You have cold surfaces that you touch. Feet are on the cold ground. Your hands are touching cold weapons.
- Convection: It is windy, and the wind is on your skin. The wind chill is not a feeling. The wind chill is a function of physics.
- Evaporation: You sweat. Sweat evaporates. Evaporation removes heat from the body. Damp skin = cold skin. Moisture management is temperature management.
- Respiration: You breathe. Warm breath is expelled on each breath. Cold air is inhaled every time you breathe in. You use your body's energy to heat that air.

THE OHIO WINTER REALITY
Ohio is NOT Minnesota. Ohio is not Alaska. Ohio is worse.
The temperature swings. It was 20 degrees one day. Next, the temperature is 40 degrees. Rain on Monday. Snow on Tuesday. Ice on Wednesday. You can't adjust. You can't let your gear adapt. No matter what you wear, you feel cold.
The wind that blows over Lake Erie cuts through all things. In the Ohio Valley, the cold may be wet and deep due to the humidity. The clouds and sky are grey. For weeks, the sun is not seen.
Ohio's winter is a favorite season for the enemy! That you're cold, miserable, and distracted is the enemy's delight. A cold soldier makes mistakes. A cold soldier's mind goes astray. A soldier that is cold is a weak soldier.
The Winter Combat Protocol is your response to counterattack. Not a suggestion. Not a theory. A system to keep warm if the military's issued clothing doesn't meet your needs.

THE FIVE LAYERS OF THE WINTER COMBAT PROTOCOL
The protocol consists of 5 layers. Not clothing layers. Action layers. Perform them sequentially.
1. What Touches Your Skin?
Silk-weight long underwear is issued by the military. It is not enough. No matter how much they gave, it was never enough!
Use merino wool clothes against the skin. Merino wool helps to absorb moisture from your body. Unlike silk, merino wool will not sag or lose its insulating properties when wet. After days of wear, Merino wool does not have a smell. The military does not have merino wool. Buy your own.
Never wear cotton on your skin. Cotton kills. Cotton absorbs sweat and keeps it on your body. Moisture is a good conductor of cold. Cold kills.
2. What Traps Heat?
The fleece jacket is military issue. It is good. It is not enough.
Put a plush sweater on top of your fleece. When wet, wool is the world's best insulator. Wool sweaters are no longer available in the military. Buy your own.
Consider using a down vest if the mission permits. Down trappings retain heat more efficiently than any synthetic material. There is no point in having it down if it's wet. Keep it under your shell. Avoid getting it wet.

3. What Blocks the Wind
The Gore-Tex jacket is issued by the military. It blocks wind. It blocks rain. Does NOT insulate or trap heat. Understand the difference.
The outside layer is a shell. Shells are not heat-retaining. The shell prevents the wind from taking your warmth. The shell prevents rain from getting in contact with your insulation.
Ensure that your shell is snugly fitted over the rest of your outfit. Compressed insulation is compacted. Insulation that has been compressed is not effective. An airlock is required between layers. You stay warm by the heat from the air. Not fabric. Air.
4. The military, and everyone else, doesn't notice this.
Your hands. Your feet. Your head. Your neck. Gloves and boots are supplied by the military. They are not enough. They had never been adequate enough.
Use disposable gloves with liners. Change the liners when they get wet. Carry multiple pairs. Wet liners will actually chill your hands even more than no gloves at all.
Two pairs of socks are to be worn. Thin wool liner next to your skin. Over the liner is a thick wool outer. Eat them every four hours. If your feet are wet, they are cold. Feet that are cold are useless feet.
Wear a balaclava. No. A hat is not sufficient. Your neck cools down nearly as rapidly as your head. Both of these are covered by the balaclava.
5. This layer is not given by the military.
Your body is a furnace! There is a need for fuel in the furnace. MREs are issued by the military. MREs are not designed to be used in cold weather.
Try to eat before the show. Carbohydrates. Protein. Fat. You have to burn calories to generate body heat. No fuel. No heat.
Take Drink Cellular Hydrate – Electrolyte Formula prior to your watch. You are cold if you are dehydrated. Electrolytes are used to keep your body cool. In colder weather, you get dehydrated more quickly than in hot weather.

THE CAMP JAMES A. GARFIELD ASSIGNMENT
Camp James A. Garfield is the headquarters of the Ohio Army Reserve. You have trained there. You have stood in formation there. You have pulled guard duty there when the wind cut through the valley and the heaters did not work.
Your assignment is not to suffer through the cold. Your assignment is to outsmart it. The military gave you the gear. The military did not give you the knowledge. The Winter Combat Protocol is the knowledge.
The cold does not care how tough you are. The cold does not care how many pushups you can do. The cold does not care about your rank or your deployment history. The cold cares about physics.
Layering. Fueling. Hydrating. Moving. The protocol works. Toughness is not enough. Toughness without preparation is just suffering. The protocol replaces suffering with effectiveness.

Conclusion
Ohio Army Reserve, you asked, "How do I stay warm on guard duty without freezing?"
The answer is the Winter Combat Protocol. Five layers of action. Not just clothing. Fueling. Hydrating. Moving. The issued gear is the foundation. The protocol is the completion.
Merino wool against your skin. Fleece and wool over that. A loose shell to block the wind. Glove liners you can change. Extra socks in your pockets. A balaclava under your helmet.
Cellular Hydrate before your watch. Mushroom Coffee to keep you alert. Food in your stomach. Movement in your legs.
The enemy uses the cold to distract you. The enemy uses the cold to wear you down. The enemy uses the cold to make you ineffective.
The Remnant does not transition. The Remnant re-enlists.
