Spiritual Minded Military Hawaii Army National Guard: Why Do I Feel Anxious Every Sunday Night Before Drill—The Pre-Mission Protocol
On the horizon, the sun is setting over the Pacific. A decrease in the trade winds. The weekend is coming to a close. Get ready for drill weekend!
Your chest tightens. Your jaw clenches. Your mind begins to tinker with the list. Uniform ready? Weapon cleaned? Paperwork done? Have I not received the e-mail? Have I answered the text message? What about if I forget something? What if I'm not ready?
Do not be on the base yet. You are relaxing on your lanai in Honolulu. Driving back from the beach on the H-3. You're helping your children to sleep in Hilo.
The enemy doesn't wait for you to declare yourself for duty. It is Sunday night, and the enemy attacks.
You are not weak. You are in the Pre-Mission Siege. The Pre-Mission Protocol is the counter-attack.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9

WHY SUNDAY NIGHT IS THE WORST
The enemy knows your schedule. He knows the drill is coming. He knows you are not there yet. He attacks the gap between your civilian life and your military mission.
The Sunday Night Siege has three fronts.
The first front is the What-If Front. You ask yourself questions that have no answers. What if I forgot something? What if I am late? What if I fail? The enemy amplifies uncertainty. Uncertainty feels like danger. Your brain treats unknown scenarios as actual threats.
The second front is the transition front. You are not a civilian anymore. You are not a soldier yet. You are stuck in between. Your identity is in limbo. The enemy attacks the undefined space where you belong to neither world.
The third front is the Performance Front. You tell yourself you have to be perfect this weekend. Everyone will be watching. You cannot mess up. Perfectionism is not discipline. Perfectionism is fear dressed up as standards.
The Pre-Mission Protocol addresses all three fronts before Sunday night arrives.

THE PRE-MISSION PROTOCOL
1. The Thursday Recon
Please don't wait until Sunday to get ready. The gap is an unguarded gap; the enemy attacks it. Defend the crack by getting ready in advance.

On Thursday night, put your school uniform out. Not in the closet. On the chair. Clean your weapon. Not "I'll do it on Saturday." Done. Pack your bag. Put it in the car. Not in the hallway. In the car. Complete your paperwork. Not "I will do it at drill." Done.
At the end of Sunday night, there is no list. You have a done list. If it is complete, then the enemy can no longer attack it.
2. The Saturday Simulation
Drill is not new. Drill is an established mission. Run the mission in a simulator prior to the mission.
On Saturday afternoon, play the movie in your mind. You wake up at 0500. A cup of coffee is your drink. You would dress in your uniform. At 0600 you get up from your bed and come out of your house. It takes you a number of minutes to get to work. You get to the armory at 0700. You are able to identify the formation area. Formation is at 0800. Your orders are received.
The simulation does not cause stress. The simulation alleviates anxiety. Something unknown is fearsome. What we know is controllable.
3. Sunday Night Watch
It's your turn on Sunday night. The enemy attacks. You stand guard.
You have 3 posts in your watch list. You take a drink of Cellular Hydrate at 7 PM. One scoop. 16 ounces of water. Don't let the anxiety steal your water! You make Mushroom Coffee in the morning at 8 AM. Set the timer. A preset you will be glad about by your future self. When you wear your Spiritual Minded Military shirt, it is at 9 PM. Wear it to bed. Send into the subconscious mind the message, 'We are ready.' We are on mission. We are not afraid.

THE SCHOFIELD BARRACKS CONNECTION
Schofield Barracks is home to the 25th Infantry Division. The base is surrounded by red dirt and green mountains in the center of Oahu. It has been the training ground for thousands of soldiers. It's been a Sunday night siege for thousands.
Schofield prepared you to be ready. Schofield taught you to be ready BEFORE you are calm.
Pre-mission protocol isn't about being prepared. The Pre-Mission Protocol is about being calm while ready. A calm soldier cannot be defeated by the enemy! The enemy needs you to be stirred up. Distract the enemy. You must make the enemy anxious. Anxiety is the food that the enemy loves.
The enemy's hunger strike is calm.

THE THREE ANXIETY LIES
On Sunday night you get told three lies by the enemy. Learn them. Counter them.

1. "You're the only person that feels this way.
The reality is all soldiers have a Sunday night siege. Only some soldiers have a protocol. Some soldiers suffer in silence. It's not that they don't care. Their silence is due to embarrassment. You are not alone. You are not broken. You are normal.
2. Anxiety = not ready.
The reality is that anxiety is your body getting ready to take action. Adrenaline. Cortisol. Heightened awareness. Your body is not saying you're weak. Your body is saying you're being thoughtful! Anxiety is not the problem. Unmanaged anxiety is the enemy. It is under the management of the protocol.
3. "The anxiety will never go away."
The truth is the anxiety will quiet when the protocol becomes routine. The first Sunday night, the protocol feels like work. The fifth Sunday night, the protocol feels like readiness. The tenth Sunday night, the protocol feels like peace. The anxiety does not disappear. The anxiety gets smaller. The protocol gets bigger.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:6-7

THE HONOLULU ARMORY ASSIGNMENT
The Honolulu armory is home to the Hawaii Army National Guard. You have stood in formation there. You have cleaned weapons there. You have sat in the parking lot on Sunday night, dreading Monday morning.
Your assignment is not to eliminate anxiety. Your assignment is to manage it.
The Pre-Mission Protocol is not magic. The pre-mission protocol is logistics. Thursday recon. Saturday simulation. Sunday night watch. The protocol does not remove the mission. The protocol removes the surprise.

THE ISLAND CHALLENGE
Hawaii is different. The mainland feels distant. The support systems feel far away. Your family may be on the mainland. The VA is under-resourced. The isolation is real.
The enemy uses the ocean as his moat. He wants you to feel cut off.
The Pre-Mission Protocol connects you to the Remnant. You are not cut off. You are not alone. The Remnant is on every island. In Honolulu. In Hilo. In Kona. In Kahului. In Lihue. Your uniform is your signal. Wear it. The Remnant will see you.
