The Enlistment Contract: How SELRES Commitments Work
The SELRES Marine enlists for eight years. The eight years are divided into drilling time and individual ready reserve time.
The 6x2 option. Six years of drilling with a reserve unit. Two years in the Individual Ready Reserve. This is the most common option. This option provides eligibility for the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve.
The 5x3 option. Five years of drilling. Three years in the IRR.
The 4x4 option. Four years of drilling. Four years in the IRR.
The Individual Ready Reserve is not a drilling component. The IRR Marine does not attend regular training. The IRR Marine remains on call. The IRR Marine can be activated during a national emergency or large-scale mobilization.

The Benefits: What SELRES Marines Receive
The benefits are different. The benefits are still significant.
Education: The Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve provides up to 36 months of education and training benefits. The SELRES Marine must have a six-year service obligation and complete initial active-duty training.
Healthcare: TRICARE Reserve Select is available to SELRES Marines at a monthly premium. The premium is affordable. The coverage is comprehensive.
Life Insurance: Service members' Group Life Insurance is available up to $500,000. Dependents are eligible for Family SGLI.

The SELRES Marine can transition to active duty. The transition is not guaranteed. The transition is possible.
The process can be complex and lengthy. The SELRES Marine must receive approval from the command. The SELRES Marine may change military occupational specialty. The SELRES Marine may need to meet additional requirements.
The Direct Affiliation Program allows active duty Marines to transition to the Reserve. The reverse is also possible. The SELRES Marine who wants active duty must pursue it.
The transition is not automatic. The transition is earned. The SELRES Marine who transitions to active duty does not become more of a Marine. The SELRES Marine who transitions to active duty becomes a Marine with a different schedule.
