Spiritual Minded Military Ohio Air Guard: Why Does My Brain Race at Night — The Flight Deck Uniform Standard
The 2 AM Ceiling Stare
Twelve hours ago the mission was completed. The uniform is in the closet. The plane is on the ground. Post-flight inspection is complete.
Yet you are on the date at 2 AM. Your eyes are open. Your teeth are set. Your mind is playing out scenarios that are not there. The last three hours you have been able to look at the ceiling.
You are exhausted. You cannot sleep. Your body is tired. Your brain is patrolling.
Ohio Air National Guardsmen are familiar with this moment. It is that point when you are alone in the flight deck yet your cockpit is still in your head and running preflight checks. When your nervous system fails to hear that the mission is completed.
It is not insomnia. This is hyperarousal.
"I will both lie down in peace and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." — Psalm 4:8
Why Your Brain Refuses to Land
Hyperarousal does not exist as a disorder. Hyperarousal is a condition of survival.
Hyperarousal kept you alert on the flight deck. Each note was significant. Each light was a meaning. Each vibration had a meaning. Your brain was searching for aerial threats because in the air, threats are a reality.
It is not a hyperarousal problem. The issue is that hyperarousal lacks a shutdown sequence.
Your brain cannot tell the difference between a battle patrol and a bedroom. The threat is not known to your brain. Scanning continues in your brain. Your brain continues to sort. It is your brain that has kept you awake because being awake kept you alive.

This gap is taken advantage of by the enemy. He is talking in the 2 AM quietness. He knows that you are too weary to fight. He is aware that your brain is empty. He realizes that you will think whatever you want at 2 am because you simply want the noise to cease.
"He gives His beloved sleep." — Psalm 127:2
The Flight Deck Uniform Standard
You are on the flight deck to wear a uniform. The uniform reminds your brain: You are on mission. You are alert. You are ready.
Your bedroom should have a uniform as well. Not the OCPs. Not the flight suit. A uniform that informs your brain: The mission is over. You are safe. You can land.
The Flight Deck Uniform Standard is issued by Spiritual Minded Military. Your Military Spiritual minded shirt is not to be used on the flight line. You wear Your Spiritual Minded Military shirt, when it is 2 AM and you stare at the ceiling.
Wearing it to bed, you are sending yourself a clue to your brain. I watch, and yet I watch now I watch a watch of rest.
Sleeping in your OCPs is not advisable. Do not sleep in your flight suit. Sleep in Thy uniform of rest. The homogenous brain trains you. Your nervous system is trained by the brain. The aircraft is eventually landed by the nervous system.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28

The Three Landing Checklists
All pilots are familiar with the landing checklist. Ohio Air National Guardsmen are aware of the fact that you do not jump over steps. The landing your brain by the Flight Deck Uniform Standard consists of three checklists.
1. The Physical Landing
Unless it is aware that the mission is complete, your body cannot sleep. Your body requires signals.
- An hour before bedtime: No screens. No news. No social media. Your brain is informed that it is daytime by the blue light. Your brain is informed by the content that there are threats.
- One hour before sleep: 1 scoop Cellular Hydrate - Electrolyte Formula in 4 oz. of water. Minerals are required to communicate through your nervous system. Your nerves are at the alert with no minerals.
- 15 minutes to bed: Put on your Spiritual Minded Military shirt. This is not a joke. This is the uniform of rest. The shirt is perceived by your brain. Your brain recalls, "I am safe." "I am on watch. the watch is resting.

2. The Mental Landing
Your mind must have a place to store the thoughts. The thoughts need not be resolved. The thoughts must be put in store.
- And close your eyes before you die: Three minutes. List all that is racing. The mission. The family. The money. The future. Do not organize it. Do not solve it. Simply pour it onto the paper. It does not have to be stored in your brain any longer.
- When you have written: Say aloud: I have put away these thoughts. I will get them back tomorrow. They are safe. I am off duty.
3. The Spiritual Landing
Your soul must be aware who is in charge. The enemy wishes you to believe that you are alone at 2 AM. The enemy does not want you to believe that nobody is on the lookout. The opponent would have you believe that it is upon you to bear the burden.
Three words. "You are here." Not a request. Not a petition. A declaration. You are here. In this room. At 2 AM. You are here.
Having said "Silence." No more words. Your soul requires no discourse. You must be there with your spirit.
The three checklists last fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes to bring down the plane that has been going around for hours.

Why the Uniform Works
You understand uniforms. You have had them all your career.
The flight suit informs your brain that you are in the air. You are on the mission. You are scanning bad guys. The OCPs communicate with your brain: You are on the ground. You are on mission. You are ready to contact.
Your nightgar says to your head: You are off duty. You are safe. You may rest. But the majority of Ohio Air National Guardsmen are sleeping in civilian attire that states nothing. A t-shirt of a brand that does not know who you are. Meaningless sweatpants.
Your brain receives the signal. "No uniform. No mission. No alert." But your nervous system does not believe it. The nervous system knows you are a pilot. The nervous system knows the mission never ends.
The Spiritual Minded Military shirt bridges the gap. It is not civilian. It is not OCPs. It is the uniform of rest. Your brain sees the dog tags. Your brain remembers whose you are. Your brain finally agrees with your body: "We can land now."

The Enemy's 2 AM Playbook
The enemy knows you are vulnerable at 2 AM. He has a playbook. Learn it. Counter it.
Play One: The Replay. He plays the worst moments of your career on loop. The mistake. The loss. The close call. You cannot change them. He knows this. He plays them anyway.
Counter: Name the play. "This is the replay. I have stored this memory. It is not happening now. I am safe in my bed."
Play Two: The What-If. He shows you scenarios that have not happened. Your family gets hurt. Your career ends. Your finances collapse. None of these things are real. He makes them feel real.
Counter: Name the play. "This is the what-if. It is not real. I will not fight imaginary enemies at 2 AM."
Play Three: The Accusation. He tells you that you are not enough. Not a good enough airman. Not a good enough spouse. Not a good enough person. The accusations feel like your own thoughts.
Counter: Name the play. "This is the accusation. It is not my voice. I am enough. I am loved. I am His."
The enemy's plays only work if you do not recognize them. Now you recognize them. Now you have the counter.
Conclusion
Ohio Air National Guard, you have spent years learning to fly. You have spent years learning to fight. You have never been taught how to land your own plane.
The Flight Deck Uniform Standard is that teaching. The uniform is your signal. The checklists are your sequence. The Scriptures are your anchor.
You are not broken. You are not failing. You are a pilot whose aircraft never received the landing instructions.
Now you have them.
