Why Can't I Turn Off Soldier Mode at Home

Spiritual Minded Military Pennsylvania National Guard: Why Can't I Turn Off Soldier Mode at Home — The Civilian Transition Protocol

You walk through your front door. The uniform comes off. The boots come off. The mission remains.

Your shoulders remain stiff. Your mouth remains closed. Your eyes continue to scan. You are sitting on your couch. Your body believes that it is still at Fort Indiantown Gap.

The Pennsylvania National Guard has taught you to be prepared. The Guard never instructed you in unreading.

You bark at your wife. You shout at your child. You can look at the wall and can feel nothing. Your family is on tippy-toe. You are not aware of the reason why you are so. You simply know that you cannot switch it off.

There is no off switch on soldier mode. Not one was issued by the Guard.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28

Why Your Family Walks on Eggshells

It was soldier mode that you survived at Fort Indiantown Gap. Your home is being destroyed by soldier mode.

Cortisol is pumped 24 hours a day by your adrenal glands. Your muscles remain quickened. Your brain searches non-existent dangers. Your voice remains short. Your countenance remains as straight.

Such environments kept you alive in the field. They are not toiling at the dinner table.

What happened to you today? asks your wife. You listen to a danger evaluation. Your child leaves footwear in the hallway. You observe a breach of security. Your neighbor is waving on the opposite side of the street. You run his weapon.

Your family is no enemy. Soldier mode believes they are.

"Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you." — Psalm 55:22

The Three Burdens You Were Never Meant to Carry

There is no such weight as soldier mode. It is three weights, one on top of another.

  • The Body: Three days after exercise, your cortisol remains elevated. Your muscles do not relax. Your heart does not slack. Your body is unaware of the mission being over.
  • The Mind: Your brain continues to scan the threats. The foe is not in your cellar. Your brain is not aware of that. Your brain puts you on the alert. Your brain leaves you irritable.
  • The Spirit: You have been bearing witness to what you beheld. What you did. What you could not do. What your father bore. What his father bore. The burden is several generations.

The Guard instructed you to bear these burdens. The Guard never instructed you to lay them aside.

Get out of Soldier mode by thinking. Begin with the body. Actions, but not words, can be heard by the body.

The Pennsylvania Inheritance

Pennsylvania is different. The load is greater here.

The historic divisions have their roots back to the Revolutionary War. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton, and Allentown were full of soldiers whose fathers served. Whose grandfathers served. Whose great-grandfathers served.

You never studied Soldier mode at Fort Indiantown Gap. You heard it at the dinner table.

You saw your father never leave it off. He was watching his father. The trend is so ancient that nobody recalls the time when it began. This is so thick a pattern, no one knows how to put it down.

The Civilian Transition Protocol is not only yours. Your line is to follow. Who breaks the pattern, you? It is you who teaches your son that Soldier mode has an off switch.

"There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God." — Hebrews 4:9-10

What Your Father Never Taught You

Your father taught you to persevere. Your father taught you to persevere. Rest is weakness, he told you, your father.

Your father never taught you how to sleep since nobody taught him.

Rest is not taught in the Guard. The Guard educates on preparedness. Being ready is not the same as being tired. Preparedness is lack of repose.

Your father did not flunk you. He presented to you what he possessed. He provided you with Soldier mode since that was the only wrench in his arsenal.

There is more in your possession now. Use them.

The Civilian Transition Protocol is not an attack on your father. The instrument he never got is the Civilian Transition Protocol.

The 72-Hour Release Window

Soldier mode does not switch off immediately. The release of soldier mode is gradual.

Why Can't I Turn Off Soldier Mode at Home

Hours 0-24: The Body Release. Take electrolytes within one hour after arriving at home. Minerals were lost out of your body through sweat. Your nerves are communicated through minerals. Lack of minerals keeps your nervous system in Soldier mode.

No alcohol within two hours of home. No screens. Be silent for ten minutes. Darkness. Deep breathing. This is the message that your body requires. Mission accomplished. Stand down.

Hours 24-72: The Release of the mind. Five minutes of gratitude before you open your phone in the morning. Name three things you got. Not those you earned. The opposite of scanning is gratitude.

Five-minute debrief every night. How did you feel in Soldier mode this day? Where did you snap? Whither hast thou retreated? Name it. Do not judge it. Verdict holds you back. Naming releases you.

After 72 Hours: The Spirit Release. Daily silence. Ten minutes of not being requested. No petitions. Just presence. Weekly Sabbath. An hour of rest that you did not earn. Generational naming. I bear that which was never my father's to bear. Name it. Cast it. The burden rests upon thee.

You have 72 hours after every drill weekend. Use them. The enemy attacks when the window closes.

How to Stop the Pattern

You are the one. Not your father. Not the Guard. Not the VA. You.

One text per day. Three words. "You good?" Forwards it to another Pennsylvania Guardsman. Soldier mode isolates. Connection heals.

One name per week. Name an item you are carrying that is not yours. I am bearing my father's silence. I am bearing the fury of my grandfather. I am taking what I observed during deployment. Name it. Cast it.

One hour per week. Sabbath. Not a religious binding. Tactical rest. Rest is not earned. You enter rest. The Guard taught you to work hard. The Sabbath is receiving without meriting it.

The trend ends with you. Your son shall not have the set jaw. The blank stare will not descend to your daughter. The eggshell floor will not be passed on to your spouse.

You are the breaker of patterns.

The Off Switch

There is an off switch on soldier mode. The Guard does not have it, and therefore it was not issued by the Guard. The Guard is a fighter. The Church is your rest trainer.

The off switch is not a single movement. The off switch is a sequence. Body first. Wet in an hour. Be quiet in two hours. No alcohol. No screens.

Mind second. Morning gratitude. Evening debrief. Daily wingman text. Spirit third. Daily silence. Weekly Sabbath. Generational naming.

You will snap less. You will not withdraw as much. Your shoulders will stoop. Your jaw will relax. Your family will not be walking on eggshells any longer. There is an off switch on soldier mode. Now you have the order.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28

Conclusion

Carried the weight of generations you have, Pennsylvania National Guard. You have served at Fort Indiantown Gap. You have put on the garb of this land.

Now we can get rid of the uniform, which was never issued. You are not in soldier mode. Your training is soldier mode. Training may be disabled. Identity cannot.

You are not a robot. You are a son. A husband. A father. A brother. A warrior is one who understands when to fight and when to relax.

Flip the switches. Cast the burden. Enter the rest.
